Losing Weight With Shakes or Supplements: Which Is Better?

| Leestijd 8 Minuten

Using shakes for weight loss might seem easy: just drink a shake, and your cravings disappear. But is this approach effective in the long run? Or are supplements and a healthy lifestyle better options? We asked two clients who have experience with both shakes and supplements, and we also examine what research says about losing weight with mushrooms.

“I quickly lost five kilos with shakes, but the weight came right back.”

Alex, one of our clients, has been taking mushroom supplements (Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane) for five months. We asked him about his experience.

“The reason I take Cordyceps is because I started lifting weights in January. I had heard that it increases your stamina. Before that, I was trying to lose weight with shakes, as I was quite overweight. That was successful; I lost five kilos in a short time, but it flew right back on.”

“Under the guidance of a personal trainer, I changed my diet and chose Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane on the recommendation of a friend. So far, things are going really well. I have lost the five kilos, I’m eating better, and I go to the gym three times a week. I feel that Cordyceps gives me more energy, which is very nice.”

“The shakes ended up upsetting my stomach”

“For me, the shakes didn’t help,” Suzanne, a client who first came to us last year, told us. “In hindsight, I think it was because I only relied on the shakes to lose weight. Besides, I wasn’t doing much exercise, and I wasn’t really eating healthy anymore. After campylobacter was found in me, I started looking into nutrition.”

“I found out that the shakes were not good for my intestines at all, and that functional mushrooms can actually help with better digestion. I’ve been taking Turkey Tail supplements for a year now, which I feel very good about.”

Can you lose weight with shakes?

Yes, you can lose weight with shakes in the short term, as long as you take in fewer calories than you burn. In the long term, it’s just a bit trickier. Many people don’t keep it up because of the monotonous taste of the shakes. Additionally, there can be a risk of nutrient deficiencies.

Disadvantages of losing weight with shakes

Some disadvantages of losing weight with meal shakes include:

  • Nutrient deficiency: Although many meal shakes are enriched with vitamins and minerals, it is difficult to get all the nutrients you need through shakes. Fibre, in particular, is essential for healthy digestion, and shakes often do not contain enough of it.
  • No substitute for a varied diet: A balanced diet requires vitamins, minerals, fibre, proteins, carbohydrates, and unsaturated fats. Each food contains a different composition of these nutrients, making it essential to eat a variety of foods. A diet that is too one-sided can lead to nutritional gaps.
  • Less satiating than solid food: Shakes are often less filling than solid food, which can make you feel hungry again more quickly and make it challenging to stick to your diet.
  • Unhealthy artificial additives: Most shakes contain artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and other additives that may be unhealthy with prolonged consumption.
  • Chewing is crucial for proper digestion: Chewing is the first step in digestion, allowing enzymes to begin breaking down food for easier digestion and nutrient absorption. Many people drink their shakes quickly, bypassing this important step.
  • Bowel discomfort: Some people may suffer from bloating or diarrhoea due to the constant consumption of liquid meals. Especially if they are lactose intolerant or sensitive to certain ingredients.
  • No quick fix: Do you see a meal shake as a quick fix for weight loss? Then you may be missing other aspects of healthy living in a holistic way. Losing weight also involves exercise, healthy eating, taking care of yourself emotionally, etc.

Healthy weight loss with mushroom supplements

Do you prefer to look at health in a holistic way? Then leave the shakes alone. Or at least you don’t rely on them as the only means. Look at what else you eat, how to eat healthier, and what other options there are to lose weight.

Medicinal mushrooms, for example, can be a valuable addition to a healthier lifestyle. Research shows that the mushrooms below can help you lose weight in various ways.

1. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)

Reishi can boost your metabolism, helping you burn calories more efficiently, and lose weight more easily. There is also some evidence that Reishi helps keep your blood sugar levels stable. This makes you suffer less from energy dips and binge eating, preventing overeating and cravings for sweets.

In addition, Reishi can improve your sleep quality. Sleep is very important for maintaining a healthy weight. In fact, lack of sleep can unbalance hormones, which can make you crave more during the day (especially sugar) and make you store fat faster in the abdominal area (due to the increase in cortisol).

2. Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris)

Cordyceps is known for its ability to increase energy levels and stamina. By improving physical performance and stamina, Cordyceps can indirectly help with weight loss by giving you more energy to exercise and stay active.

Also, because of this, Cordyceps can not only help you lose weight but also build muscle. You can read how that works in our article on building muscle with mushroom supplements.

3. Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)

Turkey Tail is packed with prebiotic fibre that stimulates the growth of healthy gut bacteria. A healthy gut is crucial for proper digestion and can regulate your metabolism, absorb nutrients better and reduce inflammation.

Chronic inflammation plays a major role in obesity and overweight. Thanks to the anti-inflammatory properties of Turkey Tail, people may have a reduced risk of becoming obese.

4. Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)

Chaga has strong antioxidant properties. Although it does not directly contribute to weight loss, like Turkey Tail, it can help reduce inflammation and improve overall health.

5. Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

Lion’s Mane is best known for its brain, mood, and nervous system benefits. While not directly associated with weight loss, better brain function and positive mood can contribute to better diet and exercise decisions.
